When was Clemson founded?

1889! After Thomas Green Clemson's death in 1888, the state of South Carolina accepted his posthumous gift to form Clemson Agricultural College!

When did Clemson first open?

  • Clemson moved from a military college to "civilian" in 1955

  • Also, the first women enroll at Clemson University in 1955

  • The first African American student to enroll at Clemson College was Harvey B. Gantt on January 28, 1963 as an Architecture major

  • Expanded academic opportunities and research pursuits led Clemson College to transition to Clemson University in 1964

  • TIME magazine named Clemson as "Public College of the Year" in 2000

  • Clemson was ranked #21 among the nation's Top Public Universities

Clemson Agricultural College opened in July of 1893 as an all-male military college with 446 cadets.
